Congratulations President-Elect Obama!

The Matthew 25 Network would like to congratulate President-Elect Obama, Vice President-Elect Biden, their families, and their campaign on their historic victory in Tuesday's election. This is truly a great moment for America, and we look forward with hope and anticipation to his inauguration and administration.

Obama, who will be this nation's first African-American president, won in a landslide, winning traditionally "red" states like Virginia and Indiana as well as other states Bush won in 2004 like Iowa, Ohio, and Florida.

Many of the states Obama won were states targeted by Matthew 25 Network's outreach and advertising. We are proud of the candidate we endorsed and proud to have played even a small role in this historic election.

But we couldn't have done it without your generous support. Thanks for all your work - donating to put up radio and magazine advertisements, standing up against falsehoods when you heard them spoken, and participating in petition and letter-writing drives. Whatever impact the Matthew 25 Network had on this election, we had because of you.

Keep checking the Matthew 25 Network website as we present a summary of coverage on religion in the presidential election.

Thanks for your support!

Please join us in praying for Sen. Obama's family

Madelyn Payne Dunham, Barack Obama's grandmother, passed away today from cancer. She was 86.

Please join us in praying for Sen. Obama's family, and particularly Sen. Obama and his half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, as they grieve the loss of their grandmother.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to organizations seeking a cure for cancer. Here is a link to the American Cancer Society's donation page. If you feel so led, please donate to this most worthy cause.

Here is the full statement from Sen. Obama and Maya Soetoro-Ng:

It is with great sadness that we announce that our grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has died peacefully after a battle with cancer. She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left this world with the knowledge that her impact on all of us was meaningful and enduring. Our debt to her is beyond measure.

"Our family wants to thank all of those who sent flowers, cards, well-wishes, and prayers during this difficult time. It brought our grandmother and us great comfort. Our grandmother was a private woman, and we will respect her wish for a small private ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to any worthy organization in search of a cure for cancer.

May God bless Sen. Obama and his family through this emotionally-trying time.

Respond to Focus on the Family Action's "Letter from 2012 in Obama's America"

James Dobson's organization, Focus on the Family Action, recently published a letter purporting to offer a vision of 2012 after four years of an Obama administration. This letter, filled with doomsday projections, is fearmongering of the worst kind - a sensationalist fiction with almost no basis in reality.

As Christians we have been choosing hope over fear for 2000 years. Our public witness should reflect our deepest hopes, not provoke unfounded fears.

We've set up a form that will send an email message to Focus on the Family's Citizen Link email address. It will also send a copy to us here at the Matthew 25 Network so that we can post a collection of the statements online.

Conversations on Faith and Politics with Martin Sheen and Doug Kmiec

Martin Sheen, Catholic activist and actor, and Doug Kmiec, former Reagan legal counsel and Catholic legal scholar, have recorded a series of messages on faith, politics and their support for Senator Obama.

Martin Sheen is a lifelong Roman Catholic, political and social activist, and actor. As an activist, his faith has led him to participate in numerous campaigns to make the world a more just and compassionate place and to stand up for "the least of these" in our society. As an actor, he is perhaps best known for his portrayal of President Jed Bartlet on The West Wing, for which he was nominated for six Emmy awards and won one Golden Globe award and two Screen Actors Guild awards.

Douglas W. Kmiec holds the endowed chair in Constitutional Law at Pepperdine University. Prior to that, he was dean and St. Thomas More Professor of Law at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He also served as Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. He is author of the new book, Can A Catholic Support Him? Asking the Big Question About Barack Obama.

Statement of Senator Barack Obama on the Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks

In remembrance of the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Senator Obama released the following statement:

Today, we honor the memory of the lives that were lost on September 11, 2001, and grieve with the families and friends who lost someone they loved in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We will never forget those who died. We will always remember the extraordinary efforts of our firefighters, police and emergency responders, and those who sacrificed their own lives on Flight 93 to protect their fellow Americans. And we give thanks for the Americans defending us every day in our communities at home, and in our military abroad.

On 9/11, Americans across our great country came together to stand with the families of the victims, to donate blood, to give to charity, and to say a prayer for our country. Let us renew that spirit of service and that sense of common purpose. Let us remember that the terrorists responsible for 9/11 are still at large, and must be brought to justice. Let us resolve to defeat terrorist networks, defend the American homeland, stand up for the enduring American values that we cherish, and seek a new birth of freedom at home and around the world.

Sign the Petition - Matthew 25 Network Responds to Palin Speech

The Matthew 25 Network is extremely disappointed in Sarah Palin's address at the Republican National Convention. We call on her not as a political figure but as a prominent Christian, and representative of Christ to the world, to commit herself to campaigning in good faith, with love and respect for her political opponents and a strong commitment to truth-telling.

Sign the Petition - Sen. McCain: Repudiate and Take Down "The One" Ad

As Christians, we find John McCain's recent ad "The One" incredibly offensive. This ad tries to portray Senator Obama as some kind of Messiah and mocks those who support him as cult-like followers looking for a new Savior. Even more troubling, many view the ad as a dark attempt to portray Senator Obama as an anti-Christ figure.

Join us in calling on Sen. McCain to repudiate this ad and take it down immediately. Sign the petition.

Matthew 25 Network Announces Religious Endorsers

The Matthew 25 Network has announced its most recent list of religious endorsers. These endorsers, from a variety of Christian traditions, demonstrate the growing consensus among Christians that our politics needs to reflect a concern for "the least of these." Click here to see the list.

Pastor and Author Brian McLaren Sends Letter of Invitation to Join Matthew 25

Renowned author and pastor Brian McLaren has sent an invitation letter to join the Network: “I’ve promised myself again and again that I wouldn’t just stand on the sidelines complaining this election season. That’s why I’m so thrilled about positive, constructive initiatives like the Matthew 25 Network. Drawing from Jesus’ powerful parable about his solidarity with ‘the least of these,’ this network invites us to consider how to use our vote on behalf of the neediest.”
